Executive Director, Al Éxito
Dawn Martinez Oropeza is the Executive Director of Al Éxito, a statewide after-school and mentorship program for middle and high school Latinas and Latinos to motivate and prepare them for secondary and post high school education. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1992 and Masters of Fine Arts Degree from the University of California, San Diego in 2000.
Ms. Oropeza has served in many Arts Education administrative roles throughout the country: Gallery 37 in Chicago, Los Angeles Children’s Museum in San Diego, Sacramento Arts Commission and for the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, Iowa Arts Council. She has also worked as a curator/ gallery manager for Wesley Images, Mexican Heritage Plaza, Works San Jose, Iowa Asian Alliance and Latino Heritage Festival. Her greatest honor was being selected by the Chavez Family to preserve and conserve the private office of United Farm Workers Leader, Cesar E. Chavez.
Ms. Oropeza continues to conduct artists in residencies for the community and is an exhibiting artist. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and in Mexico including the Oakland Museum, Mexican Fine Arts Museum, and Centro Cultural de la Raza. She has lead community public art pieces for the Des Moines Art Center, Red Oak, Iowa and the Downtown School in Des Moines. With her husband, Juan Carlos, and children, they provide education programs on Aztec Dance and Culture to community organizations and schools across Iowa. Her work can also be seen in the book, “The Ones I Bring with Me/ Los Que Llevo Conmigo”.
